The 29th annual Pre-Kwanzaa celebration in Co-op City was a vibrant affair, full of culture and community spirit!
On Saturday, December 20, the Coalition of African American Churches and Community Organizations of Co-op City, Inc. hosted its 29th annual Pre-Kwanzaa celebration at the Bartow Community Center, located at 2049 Bartow Ave. This festive gathering, supported by Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson’s office, brought together community members for a day of entertainment and cultural appreciation.
The event featured a variety of vendors and games, offering attendees a chance to engage with local businesses and enjoy family-friendly activities. One of the highlights of the day was the Karamu feast, where guests savored traditional dishes that celebrate African heritage. The atmosphere was further enhanced by a Griot ceremony, which included captivating live performances and poetry readings that showcased the artistic talents within the community.
A particularly moving moment came when the Latrell Antonetty Band performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” often referred to as the Black National Anthem. This performance resonated with the crowd, reminding everyone of the rich history and cultural significance of the occasion.
Throughout the day, several individuals were honored for their significant contributions to the community and cultural leadership. Among those recognized were Helen G. Atkins, Kenneth Nelson, Taiwo Ifesanya, and Kaba Hiawatha Kamene. Their dedication and influence were celebrated, highlighting the importance of community engagement during this festive season.
The event’s emcee, Adeyemi LaCrown Oloruntoba, who is also the president of the Coalition, received a surprise recognition—a Scientology Volunteer Minister Certificate of Recognition—at the event’s conclusion. This special acknowledgment underscored his commitment to the community and added a personal touch to the celebration.
The Pre-Kwanzaa celebration not only provided a festive atmosphere but also reinforced the values of unity, culture, and family that are at the heart of the Kwanzaa holiday.
