Akron’s just dropped nearly $400K in grants to supercharge local businesses!

In a significant move to support local entrepreneurs and strengthen the community, Akron has announced a new round of funding totaling nearly $400,000 as part of the Great Streets Akron Initiative. This initiative aims to promote vibrant neighborhoods and bolster small businesses across the city. Business owners can utilize these funds for general operations, development, or exterior improvements, providing much-needed support in today’s challenging economic climate.

Among the beneficiaries, Trinmax Freight Movers has received a $5,000 grant through the Micro Enterprise Business Improvement Grant. Tiffanny Charlow, a representative of Trinmax, expressed her gratitude, stating, “As a minority women-owned business, this support represents more than funding — it represents belief, inclusion and opportunity. It allows us to continue building a business rooted in our community, creating jobs, supporting local families and demonstrating that diverse, women-led companies can thrive and contribute to economic growth. We are grateful for this investment and committed to using it to strengthen the community that supports us.”

This particular grant, aimed at businesses with five or fewer employees, offers more than just financial assistance. Suzie Graham Moore, Akron’s Director of Economic Development, highlighted that recipients gain access to a network of business assistance providers, reinforcing the city’s commitment to supporting local enterprises in tangible ways.

Adding to the financial boost, Matching Building Improvement Grants totaling $229,785 will complement the $165,000 allocated for Micro Enterprise Business Improvement Grants. This dual funding approach is designed to enhance the physical presence of businesses while empowering their operational capabilities.

The Great Streets Akron Initiative, launched in 2018, has already distributed over $2 million to local businesses, showcasing the city’s dedication to nurturing its entrepreneurial ecosystem. The funding for these grants is sourced from Community Development Block Grants through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, illustrating the collaborative effort to uplift communities.

This year’s funding initiative is set to improve 14 properties and support about 40 entrepreneurs. Businesses located in 13 Neighborhood Business Districts are eligible for this funding, including areas like Copley East, Ellet, and Goodyear Heights, among others. With renewed investment in local entrepreneurship, Akron is paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive economic future.
