In a heartwarming ceremony filled with pride, Marcus McGirt has made history by becoming Latta’s first African American mayor!
On December 28, 2025, an emotional and historic event unfolded at the Weston Chapel AME Church in Latta, marking a significant milestone in the town’s history. Marcus McGirt was sworn in as the new mayor, becoming the first African American to hold this esteemed position. The ceremony was a moment of celebration for the community, reflecting on the past while envisioning a hopeful future.
The event commenced with Reverend Leonard E. Simmons, the pastor of Weston Chapel AME, serving as the Master of Ceremony. He welcomed attendees, setting an uplifting tone that resonated throughout the day. The audience was treated to a stirring performance of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” by Mr. Rashad Cade, which evoked a sense of unity and remembrance.
Reverend William J. Walker offered an opening prayer, asking for guidance and strength for Mayor McGirt as he stepped into this new chapter. Pastor Shawn Myers read from the Old Testament, emphasizing the significance of leadership in the community, while Pastor James Orr shared a New Testament message that encouraged hope and progress. The church filled with emotion as Mrs. Sharonda Jacobs and the community choir performed “Lord, It’s In Your Hands,” filling the atmosphere with soul-stirring music.
Mr. Amir Bethea from the Save Our Youth Movement recited a motivational poem titled “Don’t Quit,” inspiring everyone to persevere in the face of challenges. Following these heartfelt moments, several prominent figures took to the stage to share their thoughts. Mrs. Johnnie Leuhrs and Mrs. Rachel Caulder represented the community, reflecting on the importance of this historic moment. Mr. Ruben Freeman, the District Director of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., congratulated McGirt, while Mayor Tally McColl of Dillon expressed support for his vision. Superintendent of Latta Schools, Mrs. Stephanie Ard, shared her enthusiasm for future educational opportunities in the town.
Well-wishes flowed in from various leaders, including Dillon County Sheriff Jamie Hamilton and Senator Kent Williams. House Representative Dr. Jermaine Johnson highlighted his confidence in McGirt’s leadership. The emotional ceremony included a solo performance by Patrick Outler from Alpha Phi Alpha, amplifying the reflective atmosphere.
Bishop Brian E. McKnight, Senior Pastor of Transformation Community Church, delivered a keynote address filled with encouragement. He stressed the importance of community, leadership, and collaboration in moving forward together.
As the ceremony progressed, the Honorable Judge Janette Dupree administered the oath of office to McGirt. Surrounded by family, friends, and supporters, he took the oath with his two sons by his side, officially becoming Latta’s first African American mayor. In his moving speech, McGirt expressed his gratitude to his family, pastor, and especially his mother, a heartfelt moment that resonated with many in attendance. “This is for my family, for my community, and for everyone who has believed in me,” he remarked.
Looking to the future, Mayor McGirt laid out his vision for Latta. He pledged to develop a budget that addresses the town’s needs while emphasizing collaboration and careful planning. He voiced a desire to engage the youth more in local governance through job shadowing and mentorship opportunities, aiming to cultivate the next generation of leaders. McGirt also promised to support Latta’s senior citizens, ensuring they have the resources they need for a comfortable life in their community.
“I want to make sure that Latta is a place where people can thrive, feel safe, and be proud of their town,” he said, expressing hope that, with the cooperation of the town council and law enforcement, Latta would continue to flourish as a vibrant community.
